Ethan Barkley Takes Second in Pro Street at CMDRA Race 2

The CMDRA made its second stop on the schedule at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton AB, June 17-18. Team EB Speed debuted their new turbocharged Pro Street GSX-R1000. While not even near it's final state of tune, the bike managed a respectable 208 HP on the Walt Healy Motorsports dyno just 24 hours before the event. Ethan and his crew worked tirelessly on the machine in the weeks prior to the Edmonton race, but the end result was well worth the effort. A big thanks is owed to Watsen Design Ltd., they created a new injector boss system and fuel rail, from concept to complettion in less than two days. As it was rolled out of the trailer, many competitors came to see what Ethan had been working on for the last 5 months. The purpose of running the turbo bike was to gain some knowledge of the new setup, and gain some valuable championship points.

In the Street E.T. bracket class, Ethan ran well on Saturday, qualifying in the 3rd spot. Later that day during testing, he managed a new personel best of 9.73 @ 143 on his "almost" stock 2006 GSXR-1000. Not bad considering the elevation, and that the bike has only minor modifications such as the Hindle Street Megaphone exhaust system. Unfortunately Ethan wasn't as lucky come Sunday's eliminations. He made the quarterfinals when he slowed down too much racing a slower bike, and lost. Bracket racing is not about who is the quickest, but who is closer to thier time, without going "under" it. We are now currently second in the championship points, only 1 point back from first place!

Pro Street was going to be a challenge since Ethan had never riden the bike prior to this event. Other racers who had problems at the first race, were getting thier programs sorted out. Saturday morning offered a one hour test session, so the EB Speed team wasted no time in giving the bike a couple of shakedown passes. Ethan was feeling more and more comfortable on the bike as the day went on. In the second round of qualifying, he had a good launch, and put the Suzuki Canada / Walt Healy Motorsports GSX-R1000 up front with a decent 9.41 @ 148 MPH. Ken Froese was close behind on his nitrous powered Suzuki Hayabusa with a 9.53 @ 144 MPH. After qualifying, Ethan decided that some minor changes to the clutch were in order, still only having five pases on the bike at this time. Sunday's eliminations went well, with rider and bike starting to gel. In the opening round, Ethan had the bye, and ran a conservative 9.6 @ 149 MPH. In round two, he leaned on the custom made Velocity Racing turbo system a bit more, netting a respectable 9.36 @ 150 MPH. Ethan would meet up with the second place qualifyer, Ken Froese in the finals. Ken was running strong with an earlier pass of 9.39 @ 146 MPH. Ethan's winning streak of eight straight CMDRA Pro Street events, spanning two seasons finally came to an end. Ken had a better launch and great light, while Ethan stumbled and the bike mis-shifted. Ken ran a new personal best of 9.33 @ 146 MPH vs. Ethan's 9.64 @ 149 MPH.

As for the Championship standings in Pro Street, Ethan is now tied with Ken Froese. This is not a familiar position for the two time champ, but he is just getting started. In Edmonton Team EB Speed ran a mere 4 PSI of boost making about 200HP. The Velocity Racing system that is employed on the bike is capable of 20+PSI making in excess of 400HP.
